Audiodescription

The audio description and the accompanying tactile tour, which takes place before the event, are for blind and visually impaired audiences.

Audio description is used to describe what is happening on stage to a blind and visually impaired audience during the performance. This description is usually transmitted via wireless headphones, which are available free of charge at the entrance. Alternatively, there are shows where the audio description is built in as an artistic element live on stage for all to hear.

Register for the audio description and tactile tour by email or phone: info@rodeofestival.de or: 089 20970321.

Please note: All audio description at rodeofestival is in german.

Events with a strong sound or text

We have sought the expertise of blind audiences when planning our program. Thanks to their assessment, we have labeled events which are interesting for blind and visually impaired audiences even without audio description or tactile tour.

Before the shows, we also offer an introduction for blind and visually impaired audiences.

The following shows are without audio description, but are also exciting for blind and visually impaired audiences thanks to their special sound dramaturgy:

Relaxed Performance

Relaxed Performance means that the atmosphere at these events is more relaxed than what one might be used to in a theatre. This is intended to make it more enjoyable, especially for those who find it difficult to sit still in hard chairs for long periods of time (for example, autistic people, people with Tourette’s, people with learning difficulties or chronic pain).

The aim is to adapt conventional theater etiquette so that everyone can experience a performance in a relaxed atmosphere. Among other things, this means:

– the Relaxed Performance is announced before the performance begins
– noises and movements from the audience are welcome
Freedom of movement is given: The audience is allowed to leave and re-enter the room at any time, for example to go to the toilet or to get some fresh air
– We offer alternative seating in the form of cozy beanbags in the front row
– In addition, there is often the option of early boarding, i.e. early admission to the auditoriumto get used to the space and lighting situation and to find your seat in peace.

These criteria are possible in a Relaxed Performance, but not all of them are always guaranteed. Check Accessibility on each event page for further details:

Bo Burnham vs. Jeff Bezos is a theatrical screening, a durational performance and a self-awareness journey tailored for Gen Z. It delves into themes of isolation within the parasocial dynamics of the internet, highlighting the inseparable link between ego and screen, and the shaping influence of the internet on our perception of the world. It unfolds over four hours, navigating the blurred boundaries between analogue and digital realms, where our search history reveals our deepest longings.

What if human bodies could be used to generate energy? This raises critical questions about which bodies are considered "usable" under this paradigm and which are not. The immersive performance Blackouts explores these issues by transforming visitors into a collective human power plant, blending party and capitalism into a complex narrative. Is this a solution to the climate crisis or merely a new form of exploitation? Are you a cog in the machine or the sand that grinds it to a halt?

Can I bring a guide dog?

Guide dogs or assistant dogs are permitted. Please let us know when you buy your tickets so that we can provide suitable spaces.

Is there a quiet space?

Currently there is no designated quiet room planned.

During daytime, the Festivalzentrum at Import Export will provide a space for spectators and artists with and without disabilities to recharge their batteries, escape overstimulation and find peace. Import Export has relaxed seating, dim lights and background music is played through the venue’s sound system during the day at a low volume.

During late nights on the weekend (from 9 p.m. onwards), we have DJs playing loud music. We stock free disposable earplugs at the bar.

Where are the seats for wheelchair users in the theater?

Our first row in all our venues has level access if you require step-free seating. Your companion can sit next to you. We also offer alternative seating in the form of cozy beanbags in the first row at many venues and shows. You can find out more details in the individual projects under “Accessibility”.

All venues are accessible for wheelchair users.

All information on accessibility at the individual venues, routes and wheelchair-accessible toilets can be found here:

Access tickets are priced as concessions and can be booked online via our ticket provider rausgegangen.de. We offer free tickets for companions and assistants, and can also be booked via our ticket provider rausgegangen.de . We don’t ask for proof, it’s entirely based on trust.

About this Website

What are content notes / sensitive content?

In our description texts we often do not give detailed information about what happens on stage. We do this because many visitors like to be surprised. You will find all the important information on sensitive content and triggers, and on sensory stimuli such as sounds and effects, at the bottom of the respective project pages under “Content Notes”. This way, you can decide for yourself whether or not you want to be exposed to the content in question.

What do the icons in the calendar and the events mean?

We mark all events with icons on various accessibility topics. Here is a detailed description or so called “Accessibility Key”:

  • alternative seating

We offer alternative seating in the form of cozy beanbags in the front row.
  • audio description

This service allows blind and vision impaired people to enjoy the show by having trained describers capture the action, costumes, sets, transitions, gestures, facial expressions and lighting or special effects in a performance. This is transmitted via a discreet headset/earpiece worn by the patron.
  • DGS (german sign language)

This show is providing DGS interpreted events or events with Deaf performers. Check Accessibility on each event page for further details. German Sign Language, abbreviated to DGS, is the visual-manual language used primarily by Deaf and hard of hearing people in Germany to communicate with each other and with hearing people
  • Early Boarding

Early Boarding is an early admission approx. 30 minutes before the start of the performance. It assists visitors with visible or non-visible disabilities who wish to arrive early so that they can choose a suitable seat in peace and get used to the room and light situation in a relaxed way.
  • free / no entrance fee

This event is free of charge.
  • Highly auditory event

We have labeled events which are interesting for blind and visually impaired audiences thanks to their special sound dramaturgy even without audio description or tactile tour.
  • Highly visual events / without language

In visual events there is little or no speech. This show has minimal dialogue, and only some background music and/or sounds. We also mark seats in the auditorium where the musical vibration is particularly noticeable.
  • Open Captioning / Surtitles

Captions will be displayed on a screen on stage enabling the audience to read what is being said. It is always in view and cannot be turned off.
  • Tactile Tour

This allows blind and visually impaired participants to fully immerse themselves in live performances before the curtain rises. Approx. 1 hour before the performance, participants of the tactile tour can feel the stage set, costumes and props and make contact with the performers. This provides them with contextual information that can be understood by sighted visitors through visual perception.
  • Wheelchair Access

This venue/location is wheelchair accessible or has been made accessible for the festival. If this symbol is not displayed, access may be limited. Designated wheelchair spaces will be sold at the lowest price in the house for that performance.
