It is perhaps the most famous opening in modern literature: Gregor Samsa wakes one morning to find himself transformed into a monstrous insect. The compassion of his family soon gives way to alienation and aggression. In the end, Samsa’s death comes as a relief to everyone.

Set designer and director Manuel Gerst transforms The Metamorphosis into a happening: bachelor party meets performance art. Suspended between vulnerability and invulnerability, Kafka’s parable is reimagined here as a story about disability. The aggression directed at the deformed Other in the original text becomes, on stage, aggression directed at the object.

biographies

Manuel Gerst studied Applied Theatre Studies in Giessen under Heiner Goebbels and stage and costume design in Munich with Katrin Brack. He is a founding member of the performance collective Monster Truck, which since 2005 has developed projects at the intersection of theatre and visual art, working across both the independent scene and municipal theatres. The group’s productions have toured internationally and received numerous awards, including the George Tabori Prize.
